| Customer Reviews: It's everything I was hoping for July 19, 2010 D.C. al Fine (California) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
A week into ownership and feeling very good about this purchase. Typically I buy higher-end (not highest-end) machines, but this time I wanted a lower price, portability -- a couple of steps above netbook, a few down from desktop replacement -- and a really good feel. I haven't been disappointed so far.
Things that are great: The keyboard is a joy, and I haven't felt the need to throw on a mouse. No issues connecting to my older wireless network, and streams Netflix and Hulu to my TV without a hiccup. Plenty responsive to everything I've asked it to do so far. Things that aren't: The fan is a little more audible than I would like. Things that are neither good nor bad, but you might like to know: Speakers are under the front lip, an odd placement, but doesn't seem to interfere with the sound much. Don't expect a lot of oomph from these small speakers, but headphones, TV or external speakers sound fine. There is no optical drive, so you'll install and backup with portable or thumb drives, your home network or the internet. The chrome look is very distinctive (think 50's sports car).
There are three models in the T235 series. This one, the T235D-S1345, is the middle of the price range and has an AMD Turion II Neo K625 processor. The S1340 has 3MB of RAM and an AMD Athlon II Neo K325. The S2350 is the one that's supposed to get the longest battery life, and has an Intel Pentium U5400. Each comes in three colors, black, white and red. There is also a smaller (11.6") version, the T215 series, for those looking for a slight notch above netbook.
Met my needs! July 15, 2010 Marlen V 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered this in almost a 'blind-folded' mode because of not having any given reviews on the internet on this new Toshiba laptop. I bought this laptop as an 'update' for my previous Toshiba that is still in well-functioning conditions after 4 years of being going everywhere with it. So, deciding to buy a Toshiba again wasn't difficult at all.
I have been testing it for 3 days, installing all my programs - I mostly use it for web-surfing, video making, photo-shopping, downloading, etc- so far it works really well on rendering videos and handling a lot of images in a folder and going through them using the touchpad is quite cool. I haven't done the restore back up yet which is recommended and can be done with USB flash stick as well - so no need to buy an external optical dvd writer.
It is quite a sleek-looking laptop - the keyboard is flat and spread out meaning I did prefer the keyboard I had in my other laptop but it doesn't bother me - The touchpad is quite cool I have to say that I was going to buy the previous Toshiba model featuring similar AMD processor, yet fortunately enough I discovered this new model on time before ordering. So, touchpad is quite similar to the old one I had, two left and right buttons and it is around 2 inches, so it's cool - The weight of the laptop is fair enough as it's been specified considering it has no optical drive -
The webcam is quite cool quality as well so I'm glad about that - I still have to try the full capacity of it with multi-tasking so far it's only crashed once or twice after having many programs opened - nothing serious though.
You still get though the fingerprints on the cover so, I simply keep one of those cloths to clean screens nearby and problem solved.
Besides that it is cool, battery life is saved when used in eco-mode - also if it is left on it goes in an 'off mode' which I find it quite cool considering the energy saved with this automatic response that we as humans don't always consider in the moment - the features of toshiba on this windows 7 are handy, it's got cool.
So, I am definitely glad that I chose this one, it is the right size for backpacking and moving around - I don't pay much attention to the looks of it though the pattern isn't really 'my thing', I liked my old-school matt surface but, the machine works really well -
Generally cool for the price payed.
Good product, fair price July 24, 2010 Keelan Murphy (Seattle, WA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered this specific Satellite because, unlike other Satellite models, the review I read said the touch pad worked great; which seemed the main complaint of the other models (lagging behind and such). I agree with the other reviewers in that this model is great. The touch pad is awesome, I've noticed no problem once I calibrated it to my preferred speed setting. I also agree that the only complaint would be the speakers. If you are looking for an "entertainment" laptop, get some external speakers for it. The battery lasts, unlike basically every other computer. It stays reasonably cool to the touch; nothing bothersome or even noticeable; unless you're looking. The fan does run to keep it cool but it is reasonably quiet. Acceptable even for taking to class, in my opinion, so it is not too loud.
Overall, after spending hours over a period of days looking for the right computer, this seemed to have it all. Battery life, compact, quiet, cool to the touch, and all the RAM I need for now (4 gigs) (upgradeable to 8 if you deem necessary). I was always an HP guy but after getting tired of all the battery BS, and the heat BS, I decided to jump ship. Very happy I did. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a good product for the price. Obviously, for $600 you can't expect perfection. The housing is plastic but it seems to be of adequate quality. Plus, it's an inch thick! Which is awesome (considering the battery lasts for 6+ hours).
The screen is nice, has a great picture. Camera is okay with Google Video Chat. All the USB ports you need, HDMI, headphone and mic jacks. The keyboard is cool. I've never used the "chiclet" (if that is what it's called) where each button is low and there is some space between each one. But it is definitely quieter to type on and pretty easy to get used to; I'm actually starting to like it better. Eco mode to save power, although the screen is a bit dim for my taste when that setting is active.
If you're looking for a laptop for your kid for college, or if you are a college kid, or you're just looking for a fair priced and quality machine you'll be happy with this. I never used the disk drive in my old laptop so I don't miss it a bit. Oh yeah, Windows 7 runs great on it; Adobe PhotoShop; OpenOffice; Hulu; Netflix; World Wide Telescope, etc. Two thumbs up.
Also, I did order it on, and purchase it from, Amazon but I used my mom's account because she pays for expedited shipping. It came quickly and in good condition. I am excited to start using it when I get back to grad school next month.
Excellent but... UPDATED August 6, 2010 Manuel Frias (Lima, Peru) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok I finally bought it and it delivers everything for the price. Has very good wifi, decent speakers, very useful mouse track and specially comfortable keyboard. Yes it does come with a lot of bloatware but its manageable. Great battery and found it $100 less on office max. Now my concern, GRAPHICS. Yes it has a decent radeon hd 4225 that supposedly delivers very good youtube vids, unfortunately it lags on 360p youtube video. Also it has a very high contrast and can't find where to lower it. I went to amd/ati to download the driver but they specified the following.
\\\\\\
The following notebooks are not supported in this release:
Any notebook launched after this driver release.
Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel chipsets.
Toshiba notebooks (please check with your notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
\\\\\\\\
So I went to toshiba suppport and found the following.
\\\\\\\
AMD Display Driver(v1.0; 05-27-2010; 129.35M)
\\\\\\\\\\\
I am currently downloading the toshiba solution, hopefully it will solve my problems.
If it does then I will just give it a 5 instead of 4 stars.
NOTE: THE CONTRAST PROBLEM FOR EXAMPLE IS WHEN WRITING THIS REVIEW ON MY BROTHER'S VAIO THE TAB ON SHARE YOUR OPINIONS IS LIGHT BLUE, IN THE T235D-S1345 IS LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT ALMOST WHITE BLUE.
UPDATE: I RUN THAT THING AND WORKS GREAT, I PLUG IT TO MY HDTV AND WATCH A MATRIX BLURAY MOVIE IN 1080P. BEST 500-600 DOLLARS LAPTOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALSO IT DOESN'T GET HOT ON THE PALM REST.
